Unity Care NW Provides Health & Hygiene – CHPW Helps to Make That Possible

Unity Care NW’s vision is simple yet powerful: All people should have the opportunity to live their healthiest life.

In the past year, Unity Care NW served 24,750 people — more than 1 in 10 Whatcom County residents —by providing high-quality, whole-person care that extends beyond the exam room. As a nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Center, Unity Care NW (UCNW) delivers essential services to people who may otherwise go without. As long-standing supporters, CHPW celebrates UCNW’s vital work in our community.

Across the country, more than 1,400 Federally Qualified Community Health Centers (FQHCs), like Unity Care NW, deliver integrated care services, including medical, dental, behavioral health, and pharmacy services. In Washington State, 57% of FQHC patients are covered by Medicaid and 16% are uninsured. FQHCs like Unity Care NW are a cornerstone of our nation’s health care system— mission-driven to serve everyone regardless of ability to pay.

Unity Care NW by the numbers:

  • 7,700 – Children served each year
  • 2,800 – Seniors served each year
  • 6,500 – Prescriptions filled each month
  • 1,600 – Patients who are uninsured
  • 60% – Patients on Medicaid
  • 10% – Patients experiencing homelessness

Guiding the Way: A New Path to Health and Stability

Imagined in 2018 as a safe and welcoming resting stop for individuals on their journey out of homelessness, The Way Station is now a reality thanks to the collaborative efforts of Unity Care NW, Opportunity Council, PeaceHealth, and Whatcom County. CHPW provided funding and support for this new site.

Located at 1500 N. State Street in Bellingham, this innovative project officially opened its doors in November 2024. Unity Care NW offers essential walk-in hygiene services, including bathrooms, laundry, and showers, along with medical and mental health care for individuals experiencing homelessness. Later this Spring, Opportunity Council and PeaceHealth will open the medical respite area at the site to help individuals transition from the emergency department or recuperate after a medical procedure.

Making an Immediate Impact

The demand for The Way Station’s services has been overwhelming. Unity Care NW set an ambitious goal of serving 750 individuals in its first year. Remarkably, within just six months, more than 770 people accessed services at the site. This resounding response highlights the critical role The Way Station plays in the community, providing essential support and a path forward for local community members hardest hit by the housing crisis.

In addition to providing support for patients at UCNW, CHPW has proudly partnered with UCNW for many years — as a Health Care Champion sponsor, collaborator, and program supporter. This enduring partnership reflects a shared commitment to expanding access to quality health care for all. CHPW is honored to support Unity Care NW’s vital work in a variety of meaningful ways and to stand alongside them in increasing health access in Whatcom County.
